As every story has a past, present, and future, what may at first glimpse appear to be non-objective abstraction is in fact segmentations of energetic imagery interacting and breathing through the boundlessness of space and time. This painting is dedicated to my best friend and muse, Deanne Hastings, who tragically went missing in 2015 and has yet to be found. She once asked me to do a huge painting with a giant set of wings. This is my tribute to her. Deanne always called me her “Wings” but now she is mine and I will do whatever I can to keep her spirit alive with the beauty she inspired.

Michael Carini | Beneath The Wings Of Free Swan (Deanne’s Song)
It took me almost three years to get to this painting because I didn’t want to admit to myself that she’s really gone and may never be found, but I finally completed my tribute painting to Deanne. She used to call me her “Wings” and say I was her protector (she is the reason I have them on my back), but now she is mine. Though I was there almost every single time she needed me, this one time I was not and I will forever wonder…what if?
Utilizing the Carini Technique, you may see the swanlike figure in this painting or perhaps a beautiful woman in a white dress. You can see her head fading into the sunset as she floats above the water surrounded by beautiful flowers. As the branch beneath her breaks and her metaphorical cage crumbles to pieces, it is time to fly away as a bird set free. Sia’s “Bird Set Free” happened to play right as I was putting the final touches on this painting.
Deanne has finally found the freedom and peace she was searching for and will live on in my heart and this painting. She was my muse and inspiration in life and will continue to be so in passing. Deanne loved music, writing lyrics in my journal on her final visit. This is her swan song.
*You can see her handprints on my 10 Year Floor Canvas in the background of this photo. They are from that final visit.
