As every story has a past, present, and future, what may at first glimpse appear to be non-objective abstraction is in fact segmentations of energetic imagery interacting and breathing through the boundlessness of space and time. This painting is dedicated to my best friend and muse, Deanne Hastings, who tragically went missing in 2015 and has yet to be found. She once asked me to do a huge painting with a giant set of wings. This is my tribute to her. Deanne always called me her “Wings” but now she is mine and I will do whatever I can to keep her spirit alive with the beauty she inspired.

Do you ever feel like you have someone constantly over your shoulder judging you while you work?

Her: Dad…make this one good and sell a painting so I can get a new cat tree and some toys I won’t play with…but save the box and wrapper because I like that. Okay? Cool.

Me: Yes…while we’re talking about that, perhaps you can use one of your other cat trees as a scratching post instead of my biggest and most valuable paintings?

Her:

Me: *Resumes working in silence while continuing to be judged.

“The Up-Side of Down” was inspired by a 2009 assault and battery that hospitalized me with multiple facial fractures, severe eye trauma, and a concussion. My signature icon, which I saw flashing in my head during my concussive state, is a key repeating element in this series that represents life growing from death and discovering the positives in negatives.

Featured: You Can’t Save Me From Myself. Acrylic on panel. 30in x 48in. We are often waiting for a hero to come and save us from our lives but the truth is, in all likelihood, nobody is coming to save you. You must learn to become your own hero. You must learn to become whole on your own because you are the only person that can truly save you. Nobody else can save you from yourself.

Love is puzzling and our hearts always seem to be breaking or being put back together. It’s a perpetual state of construction and deconstruction.
