Featured Painting: Searching for hoMe

We are all searching for home. We are all searching for ourselves. When we find ourselves, we will find home. I’ve spent the majority of my life “Searching for hoMe” and I still am. I don’t think that I’ve had many periods in my life where I felt safety and comfort for an extended period of time. It has always been a fight. Most of what I’ve known has been a struggle to survive and most of it has been completely alone. I don’t regret that because it has made me strong. It has made me the man I am today. Perhaps one day though, I can find that place to call home and someone to share it with. I will not stop “Searching for hoMe.”

“Reflection, Rebuilding, Redemption, And Rebirth Of The Repentant” reflects upon and highlights the only person boxing you in and holding you down in life. It’s you. You are the only person that can change your life and it’s not always a one time thing. Sometimes you have to pick yourself up again, and again, and again.

It all begins with a conversation with yourself. You have to be honest with who you really are, where you really are, and why you’re really there. It’s nobody else’s fault. This is on you. You must then forgive everyone that has ever hurt you, including yourself. From there, you need to tear yourself down back to the core and rebuild. You have to fill all of the cracks in the foundation that you tried to avoid and cover your entire life. Only then can you truly free yourself and be reborn to rise like a phoenix.

There are going to be a lot of dark nights in this life. Ignite your own flame and become your own light. Use that light to guide yourself and to share with those still trapped in their own darkness.

“Chasing The Gate (Searching For Deanne)” reflects upon feelings of anxiety, depression, and glimmers of hope as it highlights the disappearance of my best friend and muse, Deanne Hastings, in 2015. Deanne always called me her “Wings” and is the reason I have them tattooed on my back. Now she is my “Wings”…my guardian angel. This painting depicts a long and arduous quest to find Deanne and meeting her again one day at the gateway of heaven.

“The Gate Of Alchemy” or “The Gate Of Truth” is a metaphysical and metaphorical structure and the central point of transmutation in Acrylic Alchemy. I created Acrylic Alchemy based on the principal that if I utilize my pain and struggle to create something positive and beautiful, if I learn to love it, it can no longer hurt me. Learn to master your pain. Don’t let it consume you. Embrace the suffering and use your pain for the greater good. There are a lot of people out there that need their “Wings.”

Commencing upon the precipice of homelessness, “The Boy In The Box” follows the rigid geometric structuring of the “The Up-Side Of Down” and represents the perpetual quest for personal freedom and breaking outside of the box. We all create our own boxes and some more than others.

This painting tells a story of creation and the interconnectedness of relationships. If you look closely, you may spot a large figure in the upper right corner and a much smaller figure in the bottom right. The smaller figure is in a state of genesis, feeding and growing from the nourishment and energy of the other.

This painting does have ties to a specific creation story, referencing Eve being created from the rib of Adam. Shortly after this painting was completed, someone vandalized it, puncturing and cutting through it right where Eve’s rib is. I had to patch Eve’s rib and carefully mend it, which I feel added to the symbolism and energy of the painting.

“Astranomelly” was the culminating piece of my artist residency in Downtown San Diego. During the months of April/May (2012) I spent 50 days painting on Broadway Avenue, generally averaging 10-12 hours per session and never taking a single day off. Basically living in the studio as I found myself on the precipice of homelessness, this climactic creation measures 6.5′ x 10′ and is representative of my collective experiences as “The Boy In The Box.” The culture shock of the residency experience made this both an artistic opportunity and a sociological experiment as I found myself imbued with the regionalism of this foreign community and was indoctrinated into their culture. The individuals that visited and shared their stories during my tenure in the box were all incorporated into the painting, their names inscribed in the underpainting that surrounds the iconic vortex (or black hole) that is simultaneously a symbol of the outward eyes looking in at me as I poured my soul into the canvas. The concept for “Astranomelly” came to me on a car ride home at 3:30am as I listened to the track “Battling the Sun” by local musician Astra Kelly. I had met Astra earlier that evening when she stopped in during a rare San Diego storm. The rest of the story I now leave with you.

As every story has a past, present, and future, what may at first glimpse appear to be non-objective abstraction is in fact segmentations of energetic imagery interacting and breathing through the boundlessness of space and time. I’m very blessed and thankful to be able to share this powerful and emotional piece that sheds light on suicide and suicide prevention. I’ve never shied away from the deep and the dark and I won’t start now. This is one of my most intimate and personal creations, depicting an angel embracing a suicide victim at the moment of impact. It reflects upon not only losing my father to suicide on my mother’s 21st Birthday, but also my own battles that have continued to follow me throughout my life. I was only .38 seconds away from a completely different story that would have left many of my greatest creations nothing more than dreams never brought to fruition. If you or someone you know is fighting this battle, please call 1-800-273-8255 because there is hope. There is always hope as long as you’re still breathing. Keep fighting.

This painting is on exhibition at Arts District Liberty Station with the Expressive Arts Institute in the Martha Pace Swift Gallery until June 15.
