People make a lot of promises about “forever” but that “forever” doesn’t often seem to last very long. When I say “forever”, I want it to mean “Foreverandever.” This painting depicts a scenic gardenesque fantasyland filled with floral delights, plenty of safe places to rest head, and the warm light of the setting sun peering in from above to touch your shoulder and let you know everything is going to be alright. This is the world of your dreams and everything you deserve… “Foreverandever."

“I Gave You Every Piece Of Me (Until I Was Nothing).” Have you ever felt like you gave every piece of yourself to someone until there was absolutely nothing left, only to never have it reciprocated? There are some people in this life that no nothing more than how to take, while others that know nothing more than how to give, until there is nothing left. Are you a taker or a giver? How much do you have left? What are you willing to give? Would you give everything for the one you love…until you are nothing?

This will forever be one of my favorite paintings because of who and what it represents. Deanne Hastings was my best friend and muse who tragically went missing at the end of 2015 and has yet to be found. It is suspected that she was murdered, but there has been no closure to date and I don’t believe there will be. This painting reflects the scenic overhead view on my first cross-country visit to see Deanne and help her with her recovery after a relapse in Coeur d’Alene. I remember her reaching out for help, dropping everything, and making sure I was by her side the very first moment I could be when called upon. Whatever she needed from me, I was committed to being there for her and loving her unconditionally.

Deanne always called me her “Wings” and is the reason I have them tattooed on my back. I just wish I could have there for her this last time when she really needed me most. I could sense the call was going to come, but it never did, and part of me knew why. I’ve always felt that I failed her by not being there that last time, though I wanted to be and would have been. I think one of the reasons I work so hard is because of Deanne. I always tried so hard to impress her and make her proud. The last time I saw her, she told me she was. I will forever do whatever I can to keep her spirit alive through my creations. She is now my “Wings” and my angel. I love you Deanne.

Deanne inspired a number of my my best and most personal paintings. I keep reminders of her in my studio, including the last postcard from a tribute exhibition I did for her in 2010 that portrays the very first painting she ever inspired, “Midnight Dancer (Take Me Away).” I also have her handprints from her last visit, which she placed on my “10 Year Floor Canvas,” framed and always within view. I will never part with those. The remainder of the paintings she inspired were sent to her family for her children to one day have…happy and beautiful memories of their mother.

“Reflection, Rebuilding, Redemption, And Rebirth Of The Repentant” reflects upon and highlights the only person boxing you in and holding you down in life. It’s you. You are the only person that can change your life and it’s not always a one time thing. Sometimes you have to pick yourself up again, and again, and again.

It all begins with a conversation with yourself. You have to be honest with who you really are, where you really are, and why you’re really there. It’s nobody else’s fault. This is on you. You must then forgive everyone that has ever hurt you, including yourself. From there, you need to tear yourself down back to the core and rebuild. You have to fill all of the cracks in the foundation that you tried to avoid and cover your entire life. Only then can you truly free yourself and be reborn to rise like a phoenix.

There are going to be a lot of dark nights in this life. Ignite your own flame and become your own light. Use that light to guide yourself and to share with those still trapped in their own darkness.
