Do you remember that self-portrait of depression I shared last week? My newest creation is complete. “Between The Gates (The Alchemist’s Key)” is finally complete. This one really tested me but it was imperative I finish it during Mental Health Awareness Month. Though it was an up and down journey, it played out exactly as it needed to and it really couldn’t have gone any other way for me to arrive where I did. This one kind of blew my mind to be truthful. I will be going on Instagram Live (@acrylicalchemy) today to discuss some of the subtleties and symbolism because there is a whole lot more to this painting than meets the eye.

This painting reflects upon being trapped between two gates and the search for the key to escape. The truth is, you already have it. You are the key. You are the key to everything in your life. It is also up to you to determine which gate you open. The same key opens both gates and only you can make the decision. One gate leads to regret, but it’s a practical road filled with familiar comforts. The other gate leads to everything you ever dreamed of, but it will require you to crawl through hell to get there and it will sometimes feel as if that hell has no end. Decide-

Featured: #MeToo (Darkness Of The Spotlight And The Illumination Of Shadows)

The spotlight can feel like a very dark place at times. This painting reflects upon the dark truths that lie in the shadows of that spotlight and shedding light on the monsters that are those shadows. This is dedicated to all of those that have battled, are battling, or will battle those monsters and demons. You are a light for yourself and those still trapped in the darkness of their own shadows. Only by illuminating your shadow and stepping into it with your light can you ever truly free yourself.

“Reflection, Rebuilding, Redemption, And Rebirth Of The Repentant” reflects upon and highlights the only person boxing you in and holding you down in life. It’s you. You are the only person that can change your life and it’s not always a one time thing. Sometimes you have to pick yourself up again, and again, and again.

It all begins with a conversation with yourself. You have to be honest with who you really are, where you really are, and why you’re really there. It’s nobody else’s fault. This is on you. You must then forgive everyone that has ever hurt you, including yourself. From there, you need to tear yourself down back to the core and rebuild. You have to fill all of the cracks in the foundation that you tried to avoid and cover your entire life. Only then can you truly free yourself and be reborn to rise like a phoenix.

There are going to be a lot of dark nights in this life. Ignite your own flame and become your own light. Use that light to guide yourself and to share with those still trapped in their own darkness.

“Chasing The Gate (Searching For Deanne)” reflects upon feelings of anxiety, depression, and glimmers of hope as it highlights the disappearance of my best friend and muse, Deanne Hastings, in 2015. Deanne always called me her “Wings” and is the reason I have them tattooed on my back. Now she is my “Wings”…my guardian angel. This painting depicts a long and arduous quest to find Deanne and meeting her again one day at the gateway of heaven.

“The Gate Of Alchemy” or “The Gate Of Truth” is a metaphysical and metaphorical structure and the central point of transmutation in Acrylic Alchemy. I created Acrylic Alchemy based on the principal that if I utilize my pain and struggle to create something positive and beautiful, if I learn to love it, it can no longer hurt me. Learn to master your pain. Don’t let it consume you. Embrace the suffering and use your pain for the greater good. There are a lot of people out there that need their “Wings.”

Commencing upon the precipice of homelessness, “The Boy In The Box” follows the rigid geometric structuring of the “The Up-Side Of Down” and represents the perpetual quest for personal freedom and breaking outside of the box. We all create our own boxes and some more than others.

This painting tells a story of creation and the interconnectedness of relationships. If you look closely, you may spot a large figure in the upper right corner and a much smaller figure in the bottom right. The smaller figure is in a state of genesis, feeding and growing from the nourishment and energy of the other.

This painting does have ties to a specific creation story, referencing Eve being created from the rib of Adam. Shortly after this painting was completed, someone vandalized it, puncturing and cutting through it right where Eve’s rib is. I had to patch Eve’s rib and carefully mend it, which I feel added to the symbolism and energy of the painting.

In honor of Mental Health Awareness Month, I wanted to share something beneath the paint. On the floor and perhaps a bit obscured by what surrounds it is a self-portrait. It’s a self-portrait of depression. What may appear as just a solid black color field is actually a deep blue. It has a shimmer when the light hits it just right. Most people will just see black though and not take a closer look. It also has textures or “scars” that influenced how it came to this state and what it will become. It wasn’t always blue. It wasn’t always like this. Days before it was a bright yellow with ochre and sky blue accents…but something didn’t feel quite right. Something was off. Sometimes things are just off and a wave of blue crashes over us, leaving us in an Indanthrone haze with a hint of Payne’s Grey. It doesn’t have to last forever, but it may not change today, or tomorrow, or next week. Sometimes it is only by allowing ourselves to feel that blue, in acknowledging it, that we are able to deal with it and work through it. That blue is a part our story and we shouldn’t have to hide it. At the same time, only you can change your blue. Only you can add the other colors of the palette and shape your colorful composition. There is a plan for this blue, for this this self-portrait. Things may not play out as planned. They certainly didn’t start out as planned because this wasn’t the original vision. This is where things are though, a blue base, and only you can choose how you respond to your circumstances and how you will move forward. This is a self-portrait of depression. It may be a reflection of you or it may be someone you know. It is often me and it is my self-portrait. It is my current work in progress.

The energies and color chakra pieces are a subset from “The Boy In The Box” series. Commencing upon the precipice of homelessness, “The Boy In The Box” follows the rigid geometric structuring of the “The Up-Side Of Down” and represents the perpetual quest for personal freedom and breaking outside of the box.

Do you ever feel like you’re constantly on the edge? I do. The original “Perpetually Upon The Precipice” recently found a home but canvas prints are still available. Check out my new blog at CariniArts.com and if you enjoy my work or my stories, please share them. This month I’m focusing on stories about mental health. I need your support now more than ever. Have a beautiful day, even if it’s on the precipice.
