HAPPY FATHER’S DAY!

“A Father That Was The Son” reflects upon the dynamics of father and son relationships and their intricate complexities. Some of us have great relationships with our fathers while for others, it’s a bit more tumultuous. Regardless, there are always lessons for us to learn, good and bad, as the son grows to become a man and perhaps a father himself.

A father is often the sun for a son and I happened to lose mine early in life which left me in a place of darkness for many many years. There is a very big part of him still inside of me and for too long, I carried the weight of his shadow, most of those years not even aware I was doing so. The sun can cast a mighty shadow and I am still learning to step out of his. I’m not sure if I will ever become a father myself or what the universe has in store for me…but if I do, I would like to think that I would be a good one and a man that would make my father proud.

I was blessed to be adopted by a new father several years after losing my biological. I learned valuable lessons from them both that I will carry with me always. Fathers, teach your sons to be honorable men of character and integrity. I am thankful that mine did and although there may have been some very dark nights, this son still rises.

Thank You Dads-

“I Gave You Every Piece Of Me But You Could Never Love A Puzzle (95,126,814,720 Pieces Of An Alchemist)” reflects upon battles with both self-love and the realization I often give the love I always wish I had. It’s often difficult for people to love a puzzle they can’t put together. The box can be intriguing, maybe they even open it, but so few are willing to take the time to see it through to the final piece. The number of puzzle pieces is also a direct reference to my mega creation Regenaissance. Perhaps the reason the puzzle is so difficult to complete is that so many pieces are missing because they were given away to people that mishandled them and never put them back in the box.

“Flesh Of My Flesh (Deribon)” tells a story of creation and the interconnectedness of relationships. If you look closely, you may spot a large figure in the upper right corner and a much smaller figure in the bottom right. The smaller figure is in a state of genesis, feeding and growing from the nourishment and energy of the other.

This painting does have ties to a specific creation story, referencing Eve being created from the rib of Adam. Shortly after this painting was completed, someone vandalized it, puncturing and cutting through it right where Eve’s rib is. I had to patch Eve’s rib and carefully mend it, which I feel added to the symbolism and energy of the painting.

Featured Collection: The Boy In The Box

Commencing upon the precipice of homelessness, “The Boy In The Box” follows the rigid geometric structuring of the “The Up-Side Of Down” and represents the perpetual quest for personal freedom and breaking outside of the box.

“The Up-Side of Down” was inspired by a 2009 assault and battery that hospitalized me with multiple facial fractures, severe eye trauma, and a concussion. My signature icon, which I saw flashing in my head during the concussive state, is a key repeating element in this series that represents life growing from death and discovering the positives in negatives.

“It’s Always Okay Until It’s Not” reflects upon how, often in life, out of sight is out of mind and things aren’t a problem in our eyes or minds until they are. Sometimes we see it coming and sometimes we don’t. When it hits though, it is up to us to make it right.

“Consumption Of The White Whale (Ahadevale)” references “Moby Dick” in a tale of obsession and total consumption with added historical references to Georgia O’Keeffe. You may spot that hidden treasure with an obsessive canvasing of this whale watching experience. What is your obsession? What is your white whale?
