Everything Dies Alone

Thematically, this is one of my darkest paintings. In my opinion, it’s also one of my most beautiful and valuable. It takes a deep introspective look into death and isolation…with a little homage to Donnie Darko.

Holding On To Letting Go

Sometimes we hold on to the things it is necessary to let go of and others we let go of the things it is necessary to hold on to for our personal growth. Learn the difference, hold on, and let go. This past year there were a lot of times I wanted to give up but I had to hold on to my dream, whatever it took, and learn to let go of my self-doubt. It’s a daily battle I have to fight.

I am always a work in progress and so is this first painting from my “Puzzled Hearts” collection which will soon debut. I view each painting as  a poetic journal entry and they will be a hybrid of previous bodies of work with a bit more chaos and release. That is where my life currently is and that is the story I have to tell. They will be a mixture of techniques and may also have poems embedded in them.

If you’ve missed it, I now have a weekly podcast with Vicente Enriquez that you can check out on Google Play, Apple Music, or just go to CariniArts.com + please grab some art while you’re there

“When Nobody Else Would Love Me (I Had To Learn To Love Myself)” sits on the easel. I often put it back on the easel because this concept is always a work it progress…learning to love myself. When it’s not on the easel, I hang it above my bed to serve as a reminder as I sleep beneath it. Some days I don’t like myself very much. Some days I really don’t like myself. Some days, I’d go so far as to say I even hate myself. I’m working on it though. What I have learned is that after spending far too many years seeking that love externally, I can only truly reach down and grasp that within myself. Until I find that self-love, everything external will be futile and fleeting. Self-love is hard, but who told you love would be easy…effortless? Nothing worthwhile is easy. Anything worthwhile is going to demand hard work, dedication, and sacrifice. Try to love yourself a little more each day and a little more on the days you don’t want to. Start with today.

“Knowhere To Go (Tale Of The Lost Shepherd)” references an older series I did titled “The Lost Shepherd,” which depicts hyper-realistic German Shepherds on abstract color grids. This story reflects upon how even the shepherd, the leader of the flock, can lose his or her way. Sometimes we don’t know where to go. Sometimes it may even feel like we have nowhere to go. Where are you going? I’m presently trying to figure out my path as I create it and I truly hope I know where to go soon…and I wish the same for you.

“A Nest For The White Raven”

White ravens are often bullied and pushed out of the nest by the “normal” ravens. I found this story very relatable. We all need a safe place to just be ourselves. We all need a safe place to build our nest and call home.

The energies and color chakra pieces are a subset from “The Boy In The Box” series. Commencing upon the precipice of homelessness, “The Boy In The Box” follows the rigid geometric structuring of the “The Up-Side Of Down” and represents the perpetual quest for personal freedom and breaking outside of the box.

“As The Universe Falls Together” reflects upon how when you are true to yourself and your calling, the universe seems to just sort of fall into place. Trust your energy and the energies that surrounds you. Only when you begin to do so will your life truly fall into place. This is one of the few paintings I have done that is intended to have a variable orientation, meaning you can hang it all four ways and it thematically works.

“As The Caged Bird Sings” is dedicated to my best friend and muse, Deanne Hastings, who tragically went missing in 2015 and has yet to be found. It is suspected that she was murdered but there has been no closure to date. Deanne once asked me to do a huge painting with a giant pair of wings. This is my tribute to her.

Deanne always called me her “Wings” and is the reason I have them tattooed on my back. I just wish I could have there for her this last time when she really needed me most. I could sense the call was going to come, but it never did, and part of me knew why. I’ve always felt that I failed her by not being there that last time, though I wanted to be and would have been. I think one of the reasons I work so hard is because of Deanne. I always tried so hard to impress her and make her proud. The last time I saw her, she told me she was. I will forever do whatever I can to keep her spirit alive through my creations. She is now my “Wings” and my angel. I love you Deanne.

“Flesh Of My Flesh (Deribon)” tells a story of creation and the interconnectedness of relationships. If you look closely, you may spot a large figure in the upper right corner and a much smaller figure in the bottom right. The smaller figure is in a state of genesis, feeding and growing from the nourishment and energy of the other.

This painting does have ties to a specific creation story, referencing Eve being created from the rib of Adam. Shortly after this painting was completed, someone vandalized it, puncturing and cutting through it right where Eve’s rib is. I had to patch Eve’s rib and carefully mend it, which I feel added to the symbolism and energy of the painting.
