The minimalist flower paintings are a subset collection from “The Boy In The Box” series. Commencing upon the precipice of homelessness, “The Boy In The Box” follows the rigid geometric structuring of the “The Up-Side Of Down” and represents the perpetual quest for personal freedom and breaking outside of the box.

Around 2016 I did a small collection of minimalistic flower pieces that were a deviation from “The Boy In The Box” series. I still have one small original (24" x 24") and a variety of canvas prints available. Check them out HERE

As The Son Touches The Moon” is one of my more playful and minimalistic pieces. Sometimes less is more and this has always been a piece I’ve enjoyed having around with its lighter and jovial undertones. Sometimes you have to take the impossible leap and go for everything you’ve ever dreamed possible…and impossible.

“As The Caged Bird Sings” is dedicated to my best friend and muse, Deanne Hastings, who tragically went missing in 2015 and has yet to be found. It is suspected that she was murdered but there has been no closure to date. Deanne once asked me to do a huge painting with a giant pair of wings. This is my tribute to her.

Deanne always called me her “Wings” and is the reason I have them tattooed on my back. I just wish I could have there for her this last time when she really needed me most. I could sense the call was going to come, but it never did, and part of me knew why. I’ve always felt that I failed her by not being there that last time, though I wanted to be and would have been. I think one of the reasons I work so hard is because of Deanne. I always tried so hard to impress her and make her proud. The last time I saw her, she told me she was. I will forever do whatever I can to keep her spirit alive through my creations. She is now my “Wings” and my angel. I love you Deanne.

“Flesh Of My Flesh (Deribon)” tells a story of creation and the interconnectedness of relationships. If you look closely, you may spot a large figure in the upper right corner and a much smaller figure in the bottom right. The smaller figure is in a state of genesis, feeding and growing from the nourishment and energy of the other.

This painting does have ties to a specific creation story, referencing Eve being created from the rib of Adam. Shortly after this painting was completed, someone vandalized it, puncturing and cutting through it right where Eve’s rib is. I had to patch Eve’s rib and carefully mend it, which I feel added to the symbolism and energy of the painting.

“Holding On To Letting Go.”

Sometimes we hold on to the things it is necessary to let go of and others we let go of the things it is necessary to hold on to for our personal growth. Learn the difference, hold on, and let go. This past year there were a lot of times I wanted to give up but I had to hold on to my dream, whatever it took, and learn to let go of my self-doubt. It’s a daily battle I have to fight.

Life moves in cycles and I find myself in a similar place yet again at this time. I’m determined to work through though. A dream always starts with not giving it up.

Braska and I finally finished setting up our new room and she loves it…and that makes me happy. A lot of uncomfortable but necessary life changes lately. I’m taking some big chances on myself because, upon reflection, my life just wasn’t what I wanted it to be and I was very unhappy. If you’re unhappy with your life, you may need to make some decisions that will make you temporarily uncomfortable as you reset and put yourself back on a track towards happiness. I no longer have the studio space I once did or the security of regular work, but I have opened myself up to the universe and new opportunities. I will make do with what I have for the time being and look forward to what is to come. Take chances. Invest in yourself. Make the jump.

If you enjoy my work or my stories, please share. You make what I do possible and I need your support now more than ever. Please check out CariniArts.com and if there’s something you want, I will find a solution for you. I’ve got art (of course), hoodies, shirts, swimsuits, leggings, sports bras, jewelry, and more.
