“The Roman festival October equus, consecrated to Mars, was directly associated with the realm of the dead; it was celebrated each October and marked the end of a military season – which undoubtedly indicates the transitional nature of this festival. A chariot race held a central part in this celebration, followed by a ritual of sacrificing the winning horse. During Equirria, another festivity held in Mars’s honor, horse races were held on the field of Mars.”
