Gaston Phoebus wrote a treatise on hunting, in French prose, known as the Book of Hunting. This tome shows the different ways to hunt and capture game. Gaston Phoebus dedicated his book to the Duke of Burgundy, Philip the Bold, famous for his taste for hunting. The Black man in the hunting party is probably an Ethiopian trader joining Lodewijk van Gruuthuse (1422-1492), Bruges courtier to Philip the Good, along with other wealthy businessmen, probably from southern Europe.
