Benwell Roman Vallum Crossing, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, 24.3.18.
The vallum ran parallel to Hadrian;s Wall and was designed to be a continuous obstacle for those seeking to infringe Roman territory. There were very few places to cross the vallum and this is one of those rare sites. This crossing marked the point to Benwell Fort, an area partially covered by the houses on this modern housing estate and it runs parallel to the Roman Temple I posted yesterday. The true depth of the vallum is hard to measure here but the modern landscape does not truly reflect its severity and its capacity as an obstacle. The foundations you see here are the remnants of a stone gateway or tower.
